August Derleth Centennial

derleth Today is the one hundreth birthday for August Derleth. Derleth is the guy who co-founded Arkham House to preserve H. P. Lovecraft. Along the way he published Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch, Frank Belknap Long, Henry S. Whitehead etc. I can’t say I am much of a fan of Derleth’s fiction. I have read his weird, Sherlock Holmes pastiches, H. P. Lovecraft pastiches, and even one of his regional novels. None of them excited me, the Cthulhu Mythos stuff is about as fun as having a root canal procedure. But, there is body of fiction he reprinted in well done hardbacks that are a joy to hold and read. So, lift a bottle or glass of your favorite German pilsner or lager, and toast his memory.
